Care is not a favor. It is what communities owe one another.
Samba Sunshine is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Yarmouth, Maine, working with underserved communities in the United States and Africa.

Why Samba Sunshine exists
Samba Sunshine grew out of a straightforward conviction: “Bring care to underserved communities.” That conviction met a practical reality almost immediately. A person can be seen by a clinician, given a diagnosis and a prescription, and still get worse, because the pharmacy is two hours away, because there is no food to take the medicine with, because the house is damp, or because the water that fills the cup was never safe to begin with.
Samba Sunshine is a community health and human wellbeing organization. We work with people whose health is shaped less by a diagnosis than by the conditions around them: how far the nearest clinic is, whether there is food at the end of the month, whether the roof holds through winter, whether the water is safe, and whether a child can stay in school. Our programs are built to meet those conditions directly rather than treating them as someone else's responsibility.
Short-term relief that leaves nothing behind is not a solution. A screening that never reaches a clinic, a food box with no nutrition guidance, a repaired roof in a home still full of mold: each of these looks like help and changes very little. Samba Sunshine connects these pieces on purpose so that one visit opens a path to the next, and so that capability stays inside the community long after any single program ends.
Mission
To improve health, wellbeing, and quality of life for underserved communities by providing charitable healthcare, education, and essential support so every person can live a safe, healthy, and dignified life.
Vision
A world where every vulnerable individual has equitable access to healthcare, education, and opportunities to thrive in healthy, self-sustaining communities.
We listen first, then we work with people.
Before we start any program, we take the time to understand what people actually need. We talk with families, community leaders, and local organizations about the challenges they are facing and what kind of support would be most useful.
Our work is carried out with trained healthcare volunteers, community advocates, and people from the communities we serve. We believe local people should be part of the work, not just receive the help. We also follow up when we can, because support should not end as soon as a program or visit is over.
The work can look different from one community to another. A health screening may include basic checks, health information, and referrals for people who need further care. Food support may also include simple nutrition guidance and checks for children or adults who may be at risk of malnutrition. If a family needs help with an unsafe or unsuitable home, we work with them to understand what needs to be done and involve local workers where appropriate.
The main thing is that we try to understand the situation first, provide practical support, and stay involved where follow-up is needed.

What guides the way we serve.
Dignity
Every person deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their circumstances. We meet people where they are, listen to their experiences, and make sure that receiving support never means losing their voice, privacy, or sense of worth.
Compassion
We believe care should begin with understanding. Whether we are supporting a child, an older adult, a family facing financial hardship, or someone who has been overlooked by the systems around them, we approach each person with patience, kindness, and respect.
Equity
Access to good health and basic resources should not depend on where someone lives, what they earn, or the challenges they face. We focus our efforts on people and communities that experience greater barriers to healthcare, education, nutrition, safe housing, and other essential resources.
Community
The people who live in a community understand its needs in ways that outsiders cannot. We value local knowledge and believe lasting solutions are built with communities, not simply brought to them.
Responsibility
We take seriously the trust placed in Samba Sunshine by the people we serve, our volunteers, partners, and supporters. We are committed to using resources thoughtfully, working responsibly, and being accountable for the work we undertake.
Hope
We believe difficult circumstances do not have to define a person's future. Through practical support, education, opportunity, and connection, we want to help people and communities move toward healthier, safer, and more hopeful futures.
Who this work is for.
The communities Samba Sunshine exists to stand with.
Children & students
Learning can quietly fall apart when a child cannot see the board, arrives at school hungry, or lacks the supplies their classmates have. We combine school support with health checks and nutrition assistance so that solvable problems do not become barriers to a child's education.
Orphans
Children without parental support can face gaps in healthcare, education, nutrition, and daily stability all at once. Our support is designed for continuity, providing consistent nutrition, health follow-up, and educational support that does not disappear after a single distribution.
Elderly people
Older adults living without nearby family or dependable support can be more likely to miss health screenings and live with preventable risks at home. We bring appropriate checks closer to them, identify household risks such as falls and unsafe conditions, and maintain follow-up where possible.
Prisoners
People in incarceration can be excluded from basic prevention and health education. Where access is permitted and coordinated with the responsible authorities, we provide health information and dignity-centered support without conditions or judgment.
Low-income families
When a household is under financial strain, families are often forced to make impossible choices between food, medicine, housing, transportation, and other essentials. We look at these needs together because addressing only one rarely changes the underlying situation.
Underserved communities
Entire neighborhoods and villages can go without reliable services because of distance, cost, staffing shortages, or long-standing neglect. We work in these communities through people and local structures already trusted there, while supporting approaches that can continue after our visit.
Our commitment to dignity
We do not photograph people at their lowest moment. We do not describe communities by what they lack. Everyone we work with is a participant with agency, knowledge, and standing, including in how their story is told on this website.
Community-centered philosophy
Communities help decide what is needed and much of the work is delivered by community members themselves. Where a local organization is closer to the people than we are, we strengthen them instead of competing with them.
Every community deserves a partner that stays.
